What Would Jesus Buy?

November 9, 2007

From producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and director Rob VanAlkemade, "What Would Jesus Buy?" examines the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America's mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands - Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement. Rev. Billy's epic journey takes us to chilling exorcisms at Wal-Mart headquarters, to retail interventions at the Mall of America, and all the way to the Promised Land on Christmas Day. The Stop Shopping mission reminds us that even though we may be "hypnotized and consumerized," we still have a chance to save ourselves this Christmas.

The Band's Visit

October 30, 2007

"Once, not a long time ago, a little Egyptian police band arrived in Israel. Not many remember that… It wasn't very important."

With these words, The Band's Visit opens, and with it the story of a small unimportant Egyptian band, stranded in a small unimportant Israeli town. I actually saw this film, and it was quite interesting… A nice departure from the usual Hollywood templates with real stories about real people.

The Band's Visit was nominated for an Academy Awars in the Best Foreign Language Film category, but was disqualified for having too much English.

King Corn

October 12, 2007

King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives America's fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.

The first reviews are already great, and people are already comparing it with Super Size Me in its importance. If you care about what goes into your body, King Corn looks like a great movie to further open our eyes.

Los Angeles, 2008, Southland Tales: The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. A large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action star stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

No Country For Old Men

October 6, 2007

The time is our own, when rustlers have given way to drug-runners and small towns have become free-fire zones. The story begins when Llewelyn Moss finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the law - in the person of aging, disillusioned Sheriff Bell - can contain. As Moss tries to evade his pursuers - in particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives - the film simultaneously strips down the American crime drama and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning's headlines.

Maybe it's the late hour, but the No Country For Old Men trailer left me so confused, I would've just passed on it immediately… But than again, it is directed by the Coen brothers, so you know I'll be all over it when it's released.

The Bucket List

October 6, 2007

Corporate billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and working class mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) are worlds apart. At a crossroads in their lives, they share a hospital room and discover they have two things in common: a desire to spend the time they have left doing everything they ever wanted to do before they "kick the bucket" and an unrealized need to come to terms with who they are. Together they embark on the road trip of a lifetime, becoming friends along the way and learning to live life to the fullest. Each adventure adds another check to their list, all done with insight and humor.

I really liked the new The Bucket List trailer, and would easily recommend it.
